Laundry

Category: Housekeeping

I lay out everyone's clothes that they are going to wear the next day the night before. Everything down to the undies and shoes. That way in the morning we aren't spending time trying to pick out what to wear. I have baskets set up in the utility room for laundry.  My soon to be 5 year old and 6 year old have been able to sort laundry since they were 2 :) One basket is for jeans, one for darks, one for lights and one for the bleach load. It makes it so much easier because I can just dump the load from the basket right int the washer throw a Tide POD in and go.  No more spilling laundry soap or using too much or not enough.

Cleaning Windows

Category: Housekeeping

When cleaning windows and mirrors use a page from the newspaper for the final wipe down. (Wear rubber gloves so that newsprint does not build up on your hands.) There is something in the newspaper that cleans well so that no streaks remain on the cleaned surface.

Silicone

Category: Housekeeping

If you spray silicone and let it dry on your snow shovel the snow will not stick. This also works on lawn mower blades and other tools!

Bedwetting

Category: Housekeeping

Save yourself some time and get your precious kiddo back to bed quicker after an unfortunate bed wetting accident. When you make your child's bed, put on a clean sheet, then a plastic sheet and then another clean fitted sheet. That way the next time an accident arises, it's a quick change and gets you all back to bed just a few minutes sooner.

Mismatched Socks

Category: Housekeeping

I don't know about everyone else but our socks are always mismatched; you can find 5 different socks but not a pair. I have started using lingerie bags to keep each individual's socks together through the wash and it has saved a lot of time and frustration. This works for P.E. clothes and other items too! Each person has a different colored ribbon tied to their bag so we keep them separate.

5 on the FLY!

Category: Housekeeping

This is my trick for keeping ALL the highly used areas of my home tidy and from having to do a housecleaning intervention at the end of each week or when I was growing up "Housekeeping Day - Saturday"! I grew to hate Saturdays because I always associated it with a day of major housekeeping tasks! After using an area and completing the normal steps of cleaning it up, - I simply spend five extra minutes to 'over clean' it . This maintains the area and when Saturday comes, I am ready to SHOP til' I drop instead of cleaning.

Never Empty Handed

Category: Housekeeping

We live in a two story house - remembering old truck driving days. I always take a "load" up the stairs and if possible a "return" load downstairs. Never empty handed - saves time cleaning and trips up and down the stairs.

Removing Marker

Category: Housekeeping

To remove pen, pencil, marker, or crayon from white (or light) colored walls - or even floors- use white toothpaste. Rub some onto the spot needing to be cleaned, wait a small amount of time. Using a moistened rag rub the spot until all is gone. I was a Navy wife for 9 years (& a mother of three very creative children) and I used this method to pass all of our housing inspections!

Laundry

Category: Housekeeping

We recently purchased a front loading washer/dryer which works nicely - downfall, the seal in the front tends to 'trap' our children's socks and underwear (ages 3,5, and 7). To keep this from happening I purchased medium sized lingerie bags and put each child's underwear and socks in there own bag! 2 bonuses: already separated into who's is who AND they get clean instead of staying in the seal :)

Boiling Water

Category: Housekeeping

I have found a great trick for when I boil water. I rub butter on the rim of the pot...this keeps the water from boiling over and making a huge mess. This is especially helpful when I'm boiling potatoes or pasta because I don't have a burnt mess on my stovetop that I have to scrub and scrape clean. It's wonderful.
