Hospitality

Category: Housekeeping

In my effort to NOT become someone whose messy house and non-culinary genius keeps us from inviting people into our home, a little trick I have picked up is this: When people are coming over for dinner, I like to set the table and add a little pizazz before they come. A nice centerpiece or cute arrangement makes me feel like I have something ready on time, and they feel welcomed, even if I am still getting things together!

Clean a Little Each Day

Category: Housekeeping

I work full time and am away from home about 50 hours during the week. We live in a very large old farm house and keeping up with everything is tough. But, I don't want to spend all of my weekends cleaning. So, I started the year my doing one thing around the house each evening- cleaning a cabinet, cleaning sinks, vacuuming, etc. then on Saturday or Sunday I can clean a room or two more thoroughly. I limit myself on Saturdays to stopping at noon and on Sundays (after church) to 3 pm. This way I get things done but don't spend a huge portion of my time at home cleaning, I still have time to relax and I'm not exhausted. I give myself Wednesday evenings off!

No More Scrubbing

Category: Housekeeping

If I make something and it sticks to the pan, I take all that I can out of the skillet or kettle without scraping it and then I put water in it, with dish soap and let it boil on the stove. Clean up is so easy. I love this method. When I was pregnant with my son, his grandma taught me the boil method. This saves so much time and energy. No more scrubbing.

Dishwasher

When you load the dishwasher put all the same utensils in the same dividers. Then when they are clean and you are ready to put them away, it is a breeze!

Toilet Paper

Category: Housekeeping

With a family of 6, single ply toilet paper is a must! With 6 people using one bathroom, toilet paper is gone in the blink of an eye! It may not be the softest, but it sure does last longer then 2 ply. Especially when you get the 12 pack single ply! :)

Kitchen Floor

Category: Housekeeping

My kitchen floor is hard to keep up with. I would love to mop everyday but that will never happen. So I keep a spray bottle of mop solution ready and just spray on the areas that need immediate attention and wipe it up. Wa La. Spot is wiped up and my house smells like I just mopped.

Teamwork

Category: Housekeeping

When our house gets "out of control" with things out of place, my 8 year old, my 6 year old and myself, go into "Teamwork" mode! We start in the family room and work together to pick up and straighten as quickly as we can! It becomes somewhat of a game and teaches the kids to work together and help each other, rather than argue about whose mess it is. Once we finish in the family room, we move onto another room in the house, inclucing both of their bedrooms, until we are done! It really has become more fun to pick up the house and much less stressful and overwhelming for all of us! And, it's amazing how much faster the mess gets put away! :)

Removing Sharpie

Category: Housekeeping

I walked into the living room one day and was horrified to see that my super creative toddler had scribbled all over the flat screen with a Sharpie, and in he office he had done the same to the laptop screen. Dollar signs were flashing through my mind! I didn't know what to use, especially with the TV because you have to be careful with those! I remembered a friend saying she had used Mary Kay Eye Makeup Remover to get gum off her dryer door...so I gave it try. IT WORKED! I squirted it on a paper towel and it wiped right off! The computer screen took a little more elbow grease, as he had literally made the entire screen hot pink, but that came off too! Its a $15 miracle in a bottle!

Clean a Little Each Day

Category: Housekeeping

When we had three girls with many activities on the weekend, I found that dividing my house into 5 areas and cleaning one area a day (I worked so this was something I did in the evening) helped. By the weekend my whole house was clean and I had the weekend to attend my children's activities and still have a clean house. There were some area that were assigned to each child and husband. I still try to follow this plan today even with all my children on their own and out of the house.

Less Dishes

Category: Housekeeping

When all the kids were home, they had a bad habit of using a new glass, plate, cup, fork, etc every time they needed one. My husband suggested that I cut down on the "availability" of each of those, so I left just enough cups, plates, etc to accommodate each family member. The rest I "put up" but was readily available if we had company. The kids had to rescue there cup, because there wasn't 15 available anymore. It drastically cut down dirty dishes.
